Can I paint directly on canvas?

What do I need to start painting on canvas?

To start painting, all you need is: 

- Paint (whether acrylic or oil based)

What are the types of canvas?

Stretched canvas: Stretched over a wooden frame, called stretcher bars, stretched canvas is one of the most popular types of canvas for acrylic or oil painting. Most commonly made of cotton, the canvas is primed with gesso to create an ideal painting surface.

Canvas panels: usually made from primed cotton canvas that’s mounted onto a rigid board, these panels are great for practice and are lightweight and easy to carry, making them perfect for students.

Wooden panels: these are perfect for artists working with oils, acrylics, mixed media, and more! They have many advantages over stretched canvases and are a conservator's first choice for a painting support. They are less susceptible to moisture, never sag or stretch like canvas, and are simple to hang, framed or unframed.

Canvas pads: Canvas pads are sheets of primed canvas that come in pads or loose sheets. The sheets can be stretched or mounted. Canvas pads are ideal for novices, students or just for practice.

Should I choose cotton or linen?

Linen is strong and durable, and remains the preferred surface for many artists (but is more expensive than cotton duck). If you want your painting to last, then a linen canvas is a sound investment.

On the other hand, cotton canvas is affordable and can be stretched very easily. It is possible to stretch cotton tighter than linen without straining the wooden support around the canvas. A properly prepared cotton canvas will last a long time and is the most popular surface for oil and acrylic painting, especially for students.
