What paper is best for monoprinting?

Printmaking paper is the best option for monoprinting as it is made from durable fibres that can withstand the pressure and soaking required during the printmaking process. We have a wide variety of printmaking paper at Art to Art to ensure you can make magnificent prints every time.

How do you make mono prints?

There are multiple ways you can create monoprint art. We will take you through two simple ways below:

Using gel printing plates:

  1. Lay out your gel printing plate on a table and cover it with a thin layer of paint (acrylic paint is ideal)

  2. You can use a paint roller to evenly distribute the paint over the gel plate

  3. Use clay tools or a cotton bud to create designs in the paint

  4. Press the paper down on top of the printmaking plate

  5. Peel back the paper and voila you have created an awesome monoprint!

Using a tabletop & printmaking roller:

  1. Place a piece of paper on a table and tape it in place with masking tape

  2. Squeeze the ink onto your surface and use the roller to evenly roll it out

  3. Once the ink has been rolled out, designs can be drawn into the ink using clay tools

  4. Let the print dry at room temperature

  5. Remove the tape and enjoy your new print!

What is mono in printing?

The mono in monoprinting stands for monochrome, meaning that all printers print in black and white. But, with all the techniques and art supplies you can use for monoprinting, no artist is limited to black and white printing anymore!
